Both countries had their own space programmes , competing with each other . Both countries sent their probes to the Moo , to Venus ,Mars and ,Later , to Jupiter , Saturn , Uranus and Neptune . Anyhow a real breakthrough in space exploration was the beginning of manned space flights . The first manned flight took place on April 12 , 1961 , when Yuri Gagarin went into orbit in the Soviet Vostoc 1 spaceship and proved that man could survive in space
